To Drive or not...
Sometimes I wonder if I should drive to school. Especially when I'm on an extremely crowded bus during peak hour, like what happened today. Totally squashed like a sardine, both hands preoccupied with two extremely heavy textbooks which could probably weigh a tonne. However, it isn't as easy, convenient and cheap as you think. That's why I always have second thoughts when it comes to doing it.
Firstly, if you think you're going to make it on time if you drive to school when you're late, think twice, because despite reaching the school premises on time, chances are, you'll be spending the next twenty minutes or so searching for a parking lot. Verdict? Late.
Secondly, there's such a traffic rule that says you can't travel on the exclusive Bus Lane during peak periods. Yeah, exclusive to buses. Well, you may drive on the lane, but enter at your own risk. Verdict? You'll most probably be caught in a jam if you do adhere to traffic rules. Alternatively, you could try your luck and maybe, just maybe you'll reach on time! ( :
Thirdly, petrol costs more than bus fares. There are more and more ERP gantries on the roads. With fluctuations in oil prices again (what's new?) and inflation, I conclude that it's always cheaper to take the public transport.
But then again, I guess the benefits do outweigh the disadvantages because if you drive, you don't get to perspire as much as when you're on a crowded bus, you feel less suffocated, you get to relax, sit down and not have muscle aches after holding on to heavy weights for fifty minutes. Driving to school is also less time consuming, provided if you can get a parking lot quickly and there isn't traffic congestion!
But, you can only use the car when your Dad doesn't drive to work!! : ( Well, not that I fancy driving to school. I'm extremely lazy, and would rather sleep given the duration of the lengthy bus rides. That's if I can get a seat. It's a tough competition out there. You may be fighting for space with other vehicles on roads and car parks, but at the same time, you could be competing with others for seats on buses and trains. It all boils down to the survival of the fittest. You are right, this is Singapore.
